Has your carpet seen better days?
Four signs that your carpet may need to be replaced
Very few of us budget for home maintenance. Most people “find the money” when something major has to be replaced or repaired. Because of the expense, when it comes to flooring, especially carpet, we tend to overlook some of the obvious signs that it may need to be replaced. We rationalize that cleaning it will make it look better and, perhaps, even give it a little longer life. The reality is there will come a time where replacing your carpet is the only option that makes sense. Here are four, tell-tale signs, that your carpet has outlived its usefulness and should be replaced.
Unsightly and permanent stains
No doubt you have had that house guest that spilled something on your carpet. Either that or damage has been done by the kids, pets or anyone else in the family. You’ve done your due diligence and most of the stains were caught early and cleaned. If your carpet has any age to it at all, there are stains that you weren’t able to clean completely regardless of how hard you tried. In this case, instead of covering the stain with a rug or a piece of furniture, you may want to just “bit the bullet” and have the carpet replaced.
Wear and tear
Regardless of how diligent you are about having people remove their shoes before entering your house, your carpet is going to suffer wear and tear. Most carpet manufacturers will say a good carpet has a 5-10 year lifespan depending on its use. If your carpet is getting up there in years and there is visible wear and tear, it may make sense to “put it out of its misery” and replace it. This is especially the case if you are considering selling your home.
Bad smelling
If you have animals, chances are they have gone to the bathroom on your carpet at one time or another. Even professional cleaners will tell you that pet odors are almost impossible to remove completely. And the older your carpet becomes, the more noticeable the smells become. Over the years, the odor trapped in the carpet becomes more difficult to remove. If your carpet stinks, it may be time to consider replacing it.
Carpet padding that is worn out
There are several reasons padding is used underneath a carpet. It is arguably the most important part of properly installed carpeting. Not only does good padding add life to the carpet, but it also buffers sound and makes the carpet more comfortable to walk and sit on.
It is fairly easy to tell when the padding has outlived its usefulness. The carpet will not be as comfortable to walk, sit or lie on as it once was. It will begin to wear faster and may even become a hazard. If the padding is worn out and the carpet is older, it may be time to replace both.
